How Much is the 1994 R5 Coin Worth?

There is a lot of hype around the entire range of Mandela Coins these days. These coins have a lot of sentimental value to us South Africans because it honors our beloved late president Nelson Mandela. They are also usually worth more than their face value if they are in good condition.

The 1994 Presidential Inaugeration R5 Coin is worth R450.00 if the R5 coin comes with an MS65 Grading or similar. If the coin is not graded, but is uncirculated, it is worth aound R50.00. It is important that these coins are kept in a capsule to retain their value.

If you have this coin in your posession, you may be left with some questions. Is my coin graded? Is my coin uncirculated? How can I get my coin graded and is it even possible? Read on as I clarify all these questions.

How do I know if my coin has been graded?

Coin grading is a process of determining how well the coin has been preserved.

Grading has less to do with the coins appearance than it has to do with its level of preservation.

Once the coin has been graded, it will be sealed in an airtght plastic capsule that is tamper proof and protects it from wear and devaluation.

The graded coin will have with it a grading certificate inside the capsule that displays important information about the coin.

If your coin is not encased in such a capsule, then it is unfortunately not graded. If you feel that your coin is in immaculate condition, then it might be worth moving on to the next step and get it graded.

How and where can I get my coin graded?

When getting your coin graded, the reputation of the coin grading company is vital. Two of the most trusted grading services are NGP (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) and the PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service).

Now you want to make sure that the coin you are grading is worth more than the cost of the grading service, otherwise you will be losing money doing this.

Take the time to visit these websites and check the cost of the grading service by getting in touch with them. You also need to take into account the cost of courier to and from these comapanies because they are both overseas.

Is my coin uncirculated?

To establish if your R5 coin is uncirculated or not, you will need to look at two factors.

Mint luster, which is a very distinctive sheen on the coins surface that indicates that it has not been subject to any wear at all. Usually, the only way to retain this sheen on a coin is to immediately place it in a plastic capsule so that it never rubs against any damaging surface.

No trace of wear, meaning there is no sign wear or rubbing on the coins high points. Circulated coins almost immediately start to show these signs. Once this happens, the coin can no longer be refered to as uncirculated.

Where can I sell my 1994 Presidential Inauguration R5 Coin?

If you are certain that your coin is of value after reading this article, then I highly suggest you try to sell it. I have R5 Presidential inauguration 1994

    • Hi Ndumiso, thanks for your comment. If you’re coin is graded, it may well be worth around R450 as seen on popular trading sites such as BidorBuy. Unfortunately, if it not a graded R5 coin, it is only worth around R50 if it is UNC (Uncirculated). If the coin has been in circulation, it’s will only be worth its face value, R5.
